Shock as one in four people cannot afford heating
MORE than a quarter of people cannot afford the heating for their homes
As the cold weather across the country gets colder many people are being forced to choose between staying warm or buying food.
Shock figures show that in some parts of the country as many as a third of homes keep their heating off to save money.
It comes as the Met Office put out a yellow weather warning for ice across most of the United Kingdom.
A total of 28% of the country have to live in the cold, and 25% say they make cut backs on food and other household items as the purse strings tighten.
Catherine McKinnell, Labour MP for Newcastle upon Tyne North, said:
“These figures are sadly a reflection of wider issues in the region, with increasing numbers of people – often in low paid, precarious work – who are struggling to make ends meet, whether that’s buying food for their family or being able to heat their homes.
"Far too often, people are being forced to make a cruel choice between the two and it’s unbelievable that we still have so many people living in fuel poverty in 2019"
Jason Smith, CEO MoneyExpert, who carried out the survey, said:
“To ask people to choose between heating their homes or feeding their families is not where we should be in 2019".
